All the faiths have a higher power they must answer and return to, and in order to get something out of your faith, you must do something in return. Every faith has their own beliefs about reincarnation, their creator figure and a protective divine mother. Most faiths have a story of hardship, as well as sacred scriptures, including agreements made between the followers of the religion and the higher power. Every faith has different interpretations of their scriptures, especially those that weren’t written in English, as well as their own set of symbols and meanings. Each religion has their own different coming of age ceremony that shows their dedication to their faith. Most religions have a hierarchy, as well as their own religious garb. All religions believe that actions are more important than words, and this is shown through a life form on earth whom the higher power is embodied through.

Challenges: What do you have trouble understanding? What questions do you still have? What puzzles you?
What is the difference between the creator and the preserver, what sort of roles do they each hold, and does every faith have a figure who stands as a preserver?
Why do all faiths under the christian God have a promise between a leader and a higher power to do actions in return for something for their people
How come buddhism and hinduism both originated from India?
How do you become the buddha? (any leader)
It says ‘Muslim is someone who surrenders to the will of God’ but don’t all religions surrender to God?

Concept: What is the big idea at the heart of this clip?
That all religions grow out of each other, and although they all have different beliefs and different practises, they all have things in common. As shown through the video, Buddhism formed from Hinduism, and Christianity formed from Judaism. They all have their own interpretations of the rules religion follows.

Change: How has the clip changed your viewpoint on these religions? How has it shifted you?
Hinduism is the third largest religion in the world, and can be found on every continent that has changed my beliefs that all people who practise the Hindu faith are from India.
You can chose the path your faith takes no matter where you are or who you are.
Judaism is a faith of symbolism, reverence and deep meaning-there is more depth to Jew and their religion than is displayed to people, hence why events like the Holocaust occurred because people weren’t aware of the sacrifices and devotion they show to their religion-something not many people can say. People are more than what is on the stereotypical surface.
There are 14 million Jews-6 million ins Israel.
There are nearly a billion buddhists.
There are 2 billion Christians worldwide.
Every muslim is required to give 2-3% of their net worth of the poor, which for the 2nd largest religion in the world is really inspiring and powerful.
There are 1.5 billion muslims worldwide-so they can’t all be like the way the media portrays them, most of them are better people than that.

    Hinduism
    - refers to all of the religions of India
    - Concepts of Karma, Dharma, samsara etc.
    - What a person receives in the afterlife is dependant on how they are in their human life
    Judaism
    - Similar conceptually to Christianity as they branch from the same story, believe in the same God
    - Believe more in the finer aspects of Christianity, Great emphasis on tradition
    Buddhism
    - Involves the belief that all life’s suffering is caused by selfishness at the expense of others
    - Buddha taught people how to be enlightened
    - Believe that actions are more important than beliefs
    - Grew out of Hinduism
    Christianity
    - Believe Jesus is the human form of God
    - Grew from Judaism
    - Believe in the immaculate conception
    - Love one another as I have loved you
    Islam
    - The word Muslim means someone who submits to the word of God
    - 8 pillars- requirements that need to be fulfilled

Challenges: What do you have trouble understanding? What questions do you still have? What puzzles you?
How did all of the religions initially begin/were founded?

Concept: What is the big idea at the heart of this clip?
Common to all religions is an appeal for meaning beyond existence and beyond ourselves.
Religion has been created to answer the main questions in life
    ‘Who am I’
‘What am I here to do’
They all have similarities in messages, even though practices vary

Change: How has the clip changed your viewpoint on these religions? How has it shifted you?
The 5 major religions are actually fairly similar in the main message- it’s all about being the best person you possibly can by loving one another and being kind. Every Muslim is required to give 2-3% of their net worth of the poor- this contrasts with the stereotypical image of a Muslim that the media presents us with.

I found that all the faiths have a higher power they must answer to and return to and that some questions can only be answered by our faith. Every faith has their own beliefs about reincarnation, a creator figure, a protective divine mother and a story of hardship. All religions have their own set of sacred scripture and these scriptures all have their own interpretations and translations just like how our bible wasn’t written in english but there is a translation so that we can still read the scriptures of our faith. With the scriptures also come with every religion having their own set of sacred symbols and meanings and these symbols can be incorporated into rituals such as how most religions have a coming of age ceremony/ceremony that shows their dedication to their faith. Although that is not the only way to show faith it is believed that actions are more important than beliefs (showing faith).

Concept: What is the big idea at the heart of this clip?
One of the big ideas in this video is how religions grow out of each other such as how Buddhism formed from Hinduism and Christianity formed from Judaism. It also is about informing the audience about the 5 major religions and how they are present in our world all the time and the difference in each faith and their practices and their beliefs.

Change: How has the clip changed your viewpoint on these religions? How has it shifted you?
Hinduism being the third largest religion in the world and can be found on every continent has changed my belief that all hindus have to be from india whereas you can choose the path your faith takes no matter who you are or where you come from. I have also learnt that Judaism is a faith of symbolism, reverence and deep meaning and therefore there is more depth to Jews and their religion than is displayed to people hence why events like the Holocaust occurred because people weren’t aware of the sacrifices and devotion they show to their religion something not many people can say. This has shifted me as I didn’t have knowledge of this prior and it is quite interesting to see that even those that are born into an area of a religion they might not follow that path of religion and instead find their own path.

    You Can’t Ask that

    Muslim Faith
The Muslim people interviewed spoke openly about the stigma around their religion. They spoke about the idea that all muslim women are oppressed and made to wear a head scarf or burka but in fact it is their choice if they want to wear it or not. They have Belief in one God (Allah) Belief in the Angels. Belief in the holy books sent to all the prophets including Torah that was revealed to the prophet Moses, Bible that was revealed to the prophet Jesus, and Qur'an (Koran) that was revealed to the prophet Muhammad.

    1. Hi Natalie, I similarly found it really interest how they addressed the stigma around Muslim women as it is something that is unfortunately common in today's society. I liked how you explained their beliefs as it extend my own knowledge.

  6. Religion was invented as a way to explain the unexplainable in a time where science was yet to progress to a point where it could explain mysteries such as what happens to one after they die. And so people turned to faith to search for answers.

I’m still confused as to how some of these religions grew to be so grand that they would be able to influence the global population’s politics, values, and military conflict. In the video, it is stated that there are over 2 billion Christians worldwide. In Australia, a supposed secular country, out politics, laws and constitution have all be influenced by the religious beliefs of our Prime Minister. Former PM, Tony Abbott, refused to put forward a vote for changing the constitution which stated that lawful marriage was only between a man and a woman, on the basis of his religious beliefs. This shows what negative affects organised religion can have on nations such as Australia which claims that its citizens are “young and free”. On the contrary, it is usually the out of touch older generation making the decisions for our so-called “free” population.

Religion is very old and is not needed in our modern society as we have science and common sense after the enlightenment period of the 17th century to explain life’s questions.

I now can see the appeal of such religions to those who sought out answers to life’s mysteries before the time of logic and reason. And humans, being creatures of habit, have remained true to these religions throughout millennia.

  7. Connections: The connections I made was that in Hinduism it refers to all the religions of India, and has strong beliefs about Karma and how a person behaves throughout their life dictates what happens In their after life. Judaism is very similar to christianity as they have a similar story and believe in the same God. Christainity however believes that Jesus is the human form of God and it grew from Judaism. All religions have their own set of sacred scripture and these scriptures all have their own interpretations and translations just like how our bible wasn’t written in english but there is a translation so that we can still read the scriptures of our faith.

Concept: Common to all religions is an appeal for meaning beyond existence and beyond ourselves. One of the biggest ideas of the talk was how each religion grow out of each other. For example how the Buddhist religion formed from the Hinduism and the Christianity, which was formed from the Judaism.

  8. Hi steph,
I really enjoyed reading your post, it was very detailed and clear. I found it interesting how you spoke about both regions and made connections between the both. I too learnt from your post that the five major religion are quite similar and I was very unfamiliar with this worldly connection.
