  1. Holy Switch episode 2

In each episode two young people switch lives, to be involved with a different religion. Holy Switch provides a unique window for people to learn the cultural, and the beliefs of others.
Anthony's maronite catholic and Freeman’s is buddhism monk. They have swapped religions for a little while to discover each of the religions. Freeman was very open minded when understanding the religion of Anthony's life. Freeman attends a youth group and explains his Buddhist faith to them before joining in with their games. He regularly attends
mass and takes part in as much as he can, proving his dedication to discovering catholic religion. Anthony attends a number of meditation sessions as well as helping out in the vegetarian kitchen. By the end of the first week, he believes that he has learned as much about Buddhism as he needs to know and had no other question or curiosity about the religion.

  3. Anglican and Hindu switch their lives Episode 1

The first episode was about an Anglican and a Hindu switching lives. It was interesting to see how they both took a different approach to the experiment. Kim enjoyed the cultural aspect, and took part in various hindu activities. By the end Kim became very judgmental to the fact that the Hindu group she was with don't believe in God and therefore won't be going to heaven. On the other hand Akash was trying to be open minded but it was hard for i=hump to adjust to the Catholic lifestyle as the Catholics he was with had a strong view on their own religion and they tried to convert people. The Catholics had this idea that because he didn't believe in their god he would be going to hell. This made the experiment hard for Akash as it was a whole new concept and the Catholics he was with were not open to his point of view.

Catholic and Buddice switch their lives Episode 2

Freeman (buddice) was open minded and took part in masses and activities that the Catholics took part in and tried his hardest to understand what other people live like whereas Anthony (catholic) didn't take part in the experiment and was closed minded, he had his opinion on buddice and didn't change. I think Anthony was disrespecting the buddice as he would walk out of mediation and wanted to leave early. He didn't try to understand the buddice concepts whereas Freeman (buddice) was open and keen to try something new, he was appreciating the shrine and was really touched by what Catholics stand for. Freeman was focusing on the similarities whereas Anthony was focusing on the differences.

    1. Hi maya I really enjoyed reading your response to this episode of the holy switch, this post has given me a greater understanding on the anglican and hindu religions, it was very intresting to see how Kim was so open minded with the hindu religion and how Akash found it a little harder to be open minded with the catholic lifestyle. It was really great work Maya.

  8. Buddhism’s don't have a creator God or a soul and is based on teachings and Buddha. They have money rituals that have similarities between Buddhism and Maronite Catholicism.

For the first holy switch episode Kim and Arkash were the main characters. Kim was anglican and choose to welcome hudism. She was also very welcoming and very worried about the fate of the afterlife. She has a good spirituality and was very intelligent. Arkash’s visit was less comfortable compare to kims visit. He was Hindu and not very rich. You can also be other religions as well as being Hindu.

I already knew that hinduism was the national religion of India.
I already knew that the hindu belief entailed reincarnation.
I already knew about Karma. It is is the sum of a person’s actions help to decide their future.
I already knew that Hinduism was the world's oldest religion.

    Extend:

I learnt that the Caste system divides society into 4 different classes.
I learnt that dharma is determined by birth and caste.
I learnt that dharma is like your fate.
I learnt that sasara is the term from reincarnation.
I learnt that moksha is the idea that if you are released you never have to inhabit a human body again.

    Challenge:

Are there any similarities between hinduism and buddhism?
What happens if someone does not follow their dharma?
Does hinduism entail the belief of a god or gods?
Before listening to the video, I did not know much about hinduism.

  12. In the first two episodes of Holy Switch we first saw a switch between an Anglican (evangelical) woman, Kim, and a Hindu man, Akash. We also saw a switch between a Maronite Catholic, Anthony, and a Buddhist man, Freeman. In watching these first two episodes I found that some of the participants were more open minded and inclined to immerse themselves into a new faith whereas others were close minded and hesitant to participate in rituals and life of a different faith. I found it surprising when Kim went to live with a Hindu family she was quite open into the experience but she brought her faith with her to the end and believed that the people that she was staying with, as nice as they are, were going to hell. Kim had such a strong opinion on her religion that she believe that unless you believe in Jesus Christ you are not going to heaven. On the other hand Akash who is Hindu and swapped into an Anglican environment and although he was open minded and trying to immerse himself he still brought parts if his own faith such as not wanting to sit at the head of the table and then when he attended the youth group he was shutdown. This surprised me because as soon as he started talking with that group of Anglicans they quite quickly implied that he was going to hell because of his faith and sexuality as well. I also found it quite interesting how Freeman compared to Anthony as he was much more open into immersing himself into another faith in which is quite the opposite to his as the Catholic group was much larger and louder than what he was used to. Freeman continuously participated in rituals completely which really helped him connect to the faith whereas Anthony wants to make sure he is not compromising with his own religion even when he is trying to immerse himself into Buddhist life and it surprised me when he decided to go to Sunday mass even with the experiment still going.

  13. Hindu - Anglican
Arkash practices hinduism. Their lifestyle consists of veganism and attending raituals wearing special attire. They believe in reincarnation/rebirth and have the understanding that if you live a moral life and fulfill moksha then you will break the cycle of inhabiting a body (samsara) and your soul is set free forever. Karma is a very big part of this belief and determines they way they live their lives, if you do good you are good, if you do evil you are evil. Arkash is very accepting of other cultures and do not judge they just learn to have an appreciation for the good in other beliefs. Kim is an Evangelical anglican and is very open to learning another culture. Her lifestyle includes going to church regularly and worshiping Jesus and her god. She seemed quite naive and arrogant about her culture and believe that arkash and his family were going to hell for not believing in jesus.

    Buddhism - Maronite Catholic
Buddhism is a religion that believes there is no creator god and in reincarnation/rebirth like hinduism, they eat vegetarian. To practice religion you need to empty your mind and live life believing in Karma. He saw it as an experience and felt it made his faith stronger, he looked for similarities in their faiths. Anthony practices being a maronite catholic. Rituals are different and language used in masses (lebanese)as a maronite. The bread (body) wine (blood) of jesus and is consumed in mass. The religion is about filling the mind, they worship and pray to god and different saints, anthony wasn't very open minded to buddhism.

    - Samsara basically refers to reincarnation. Hindu’s believe that every time you die you will be reincarnated into whatever you’ve earned in your previous life. This follows the Hindu principle ‘the doer of good becomes good and the doer of evil becomes evil’
    - If you lived a good life you will be reincarnated into a
    human or something good
    - If you lived a bad life you will be reincarnated into a worm
    or something bad
-The Caste system is used in Hinduism to create social order
    Extend
-Karma is actually quite different from what Western society believes it is. A modern interpretation of the term suggests that if you do bad, something bad will happen to you. However, the original Hindu meaning was that if you did good, you would become something better in the afterlife, of after reincarnation.
-Hinduism is the world’s oldest religion
    Challenge
    - What happens when somebody disobeys the social structure?
    -Are Buddism and Hinduism similar?

  19. Kim was an Anglican, Christian girl embraced that in episode one embraced a Hinduism lifestyle she was very open and appreciative of the experience and the people that follow the religion. However at the start she was conscious of being unfaithful to her religion and god.

Arkarsh was Hindu, he felt very uncomfortable and aware of the strong Christian values when people from the church group said he was going to hell due to him being gay. The Christians were also very judgemental of him, meaning he didn't have a very positive experience.

  20. Holy Switch episode 1 was about how Anglican youth leader Kim switches lives with Aakash, a Hindu man. Kim visits Hindu temples and attends various ceremonies while living with the Chaukra family. Throughout this episode I found that some individuals were willing to give changing faiths a go and had an open mind where others simply didn’t want too. Kim was very critical and had a feeling of sadness that Hindus were not going to go to heaven because they don't practice the catholic faith. However what I already know about the Hindu faith is that hinduism was the national religion of India and that the hindu belief entailed reincarnation. I also knew that it was the world's oldest religion. My understanding of Karma is now different, it was derived from indian culture. Arkash however felt very attacked throughut the Holy Swith Episode 1, the other Christians said he was going to hell due to him being gay. The Christians were very condescending of him.
